Melissa gave us the specifics for Saturday’s event:
Hello All,
Thank you for your interest in joining Genesee Country Village & Museum for our Trees for Tributaries tree planting event on Saturday, May 6. Here are some additional details for the day.
- We will meet at 9 AM on the museum’s Oatka Property (entrance directly across from main museum entrance). There will be signs that say Trees for Tributaries Parking to help direct you. Please follow the signs to park.
- Bring a shovel, work gloves and water/lunch.
- Dress for the weather and be prepared with rain gear. It calls for on and off rain on Saturday so dress accordingly and think sunshine! I’m optimistic, the weather meteorologists are wrong quite often. Maybe it will be nice out!
- We may encounter poison ivy, mosquitoes, stinging nettles and ticks. Please wear long pants and if you normally apply insect repellent, that might be a good thing to have on hand. We will lead a tick check at the end of the planting. Something we have become accustomed to doing at the museum’s nature center in recent years. Not to scare anyone off just want you spread awareness and do the best we can to keep everyone safe.
Thank you for your help. We all look forward to getting our young trees and shrubs in the ground.

Come help plant trees along the Oatka Creek this Saturday. Join us at the Genesee Country Village & Museum where we’re restoring an area where trees had to be taken down due to damage by Emerald Ash Borer.
Where?
Genesee Country Village & Museum Property on the north side of Flint Hill Road, Mumford NY – More information on parking will be available soon.
When:
This Saturday, May 6 at 9:00 AM until we are done!
What to bring:
Tools to bring with you if you have them:
- shovel and/or spade
- planting bar
- Pick axe and/or mattock tool
- Hard rubber hammer, claw hammer and/or medium size ballpeen hammer
- utility knife
- empty 5-gallon buckets with handles
- rake
Don’t forget to label your tools for easy identification.
And for yourself:
- boots
- work gloves
- insect repellent
- sunscreen
- water & lunch
You might want to wear some rain gear, as according to the NOAA, there is a 90% chance of “occasional rain or drizzle” in Mumford on Saturday. And don’t forget that bug repellent – the ticks are especially bad this year!

Earth Day Tree Check Cancelled for Tomorrow
Because of all the recent rain, Maureen & Steve thought they would go check out the water level situation at the Oatka Creek Park planting site.
Maureen reports: “Large ash have fallen on the path to the old bridge and from there the path to the bridge is completely under water. You can go overland to the trees but Steve said at least 15-20% are in water. We drove over to the fishing Parking lot. A lot of trees down on the blue trail and it is also flooded once it turns towards the creek. We again left the trail, went overland, and could not get to the our trees due to flooding. The park is a mess. The Garbutt station is predicting that the water level will continue to rise overnight. I suggest that we cancel the event tomorrow for reasons of safety. We actually heard a tree falling apart on the south steep slope of the creek.”
Charlie also reports: “The creek looks like it will crest soon, but it is just shy of flood stage, I agree about the danger as it is more than 2 feet over bank full in the park area now. ”
So there you have it! We will reschedule the work for a later date. We’ll keep you posted.

Earth Day Tree Check
Maintenance of the Trees for Tribs planting sites is important to the long term success of the planting. Join us this weekend for a health check of the site in Oatka Park.
Time and Place: Oatka Creek Park from 9AM-Noon (unless we have heavy rain showers!)
Where to Park: Fishing Access Parking Lot off Union Street or along Scottsville-Mumford Road where we walk across the tracks SEE MAP BELOW
Where to Meet: congregate At the Middle Site where we gave the training demonstrations last May
What to Bring: hammers, clippers, loppers, plastic cable ties, clipboards and pencils. Also be sure to bring water, work gloves, boots, insect repellent & sunscreen, large plastic buckets and tools for punching holes in tubes may be helpful too
What We’ll Do: We’ll straighten up the tubes, clean out weeds and debris in tubes, re-secure the tubes to stakes, remove tubes and plastic weed mats where trees are dead or completely browsed, and record plant conditions & mortality

Thanks to all the folks that helped out on Saturday morning marking storm drains in LeRoy. We marked a good portion of the drains in the Jersey Side neighborhood, and will be organizing other work sessions to continue the project throughout the Village.
